Since 2012, when the UK Government re-shuffled the available radio frequencies, the principle frequency bands used for UHF radio microphones and In-Ear-Monitoring systems are in Channel 70 or D Band (854-865MHz) and Channel 38 or G Band (606-614MHz).
The frequencies in Channel 70 are licence free.
To use the frequencies in Channel 38 you need to apply for a licence.
Some equipment is also available with built-in frequencies from Channel 65 (823-832MHz), which extends the number of microphones that can be operated on the same site at the same time, and can be used under the same licence as the one obtained for using Channel 38 frequencies.
Channel 38 UHF (606.5-613.5MHz) - Regulated/Shared. A licence is required, irrespective of the number of microphones. Interference from other users is unlikely.
Channel 65 UHF 823-832MHz - Regulated/Shared. A licence is required. Interference from other users is unlikely.
Channel 69 UHF 854.9-861.75MHz - No longer available for radio microphone use. Allocated exclusively to 4G Mobile since 2013.
Channel 70 UHF 863.1-864.9MHz - ‘Licence Free’ and therefore subject to potential interference from other users.
Interference free operation of more than 2 channels simultaneously on a site is not guaranteed, although 4 channels may be possible in most cases. More than four channels simultaneously will not be possible using licence free Ch. 70 equipment.
